St. Peters is a middle class community that began as a wilderness town settled by farmers who sought migration west of the Missouri River. Today, the city has a growing population, including several properties that have been annexed into the city.
St. Peters is part of Fort Zumwalt, Francis Howell and St. Charles school districts. Each of these successful districts has informative web pages online.
St. Peters is home to Barnes-Jewish Hospital. This is the second busiest medical center in St. Charles county. The hospital has recently been ranked 9th in the nation by US News and World Report.
The town’s name comes from the first log church, established in 1815. St. Peters on Dardenne Creek was originally a log church, which was eventually relocated and expanded. Eventually, it became All Saints Church. The church now sits on a hill overlooking the town, and the steeple is visible from I-70. A graveyard is located in the back of the church, with some gravestones dating back to the early 1800s.
The town was discovered by French traders in the late 18th century. They initially settled in the Old Town area of St. Peters. German Catholics soon joined the French traders, and from 1830-1850, the town was a prosperous farming community. At that time, it was a busy place, with two railroad depots, main street shops, hotels and saloons.
